Focus by Design
The ISE™ operating room layout includes a 15-foot circle in the center of the room, called the “Area of Focus.”
The Optimus operating table is fixed to the floor in the center of the room, and acts as the hub. All support systems and technologies within the room are directed to this focal point, so that the area beyond the circle is free of any wires, hoses or other obstacles. Equipment brought into the room and staff can therefore move unhindered around the circle.
By design, the operating surgical team remains within this circle during the operation, and no one from outside the circle is permitted within the circle. This minimizes “break of scrub” events, and limits the chances for loss of sterility. The anesthesiologist or circulating nurse manages a wireless software interface (Optimus “iOR”) on a tablet PC, controlling all equipment within the area of focus, eliminating the need of un-scrubbed staff to enter the area of focus. Any new equipment brought into the area of focus can be added onto the iOR software package and operated from beyond the circle by way of the user interface.
Focus enables:
- better positioning of staff
- prevention of “reset” events that break a surgeon’s concentration during surgery
- line-of-sight placement of data monitors and equipment control panels
- a more orderly environment
- improved sterility
…all of which promote efficiency and better surgical outcomes. In addition, such standardization permits easy introduction of new surgical technology.
